Sand-Key-Florida-Parks.jpg (13735 bytes)Sand Key Park is a 95-acre county park featuring a white sandy beach rated among the top 20 beaches in the United States.

In 1984 Sand Key Park was first opened to the public. The parks ninety five acres are located on Sand Key Florida, a barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida mainland. Clearwater Pass, leading from the Gulf to the Intracoastal waterway, separates the park from the popular resort area of Clearwater Beach. The park welcomes more than one million visitors each year.

Facilities include: This park has two distinct areas - a beach and a park. In the park proper are two picnic shelters with grills, a playground, and a restroom. Grills, picnic tables, and water fountains are but a few amenities. The beach area boasts cabana rentals, 2 beach wheel-chairs, 9 outdoor shower towers to rinse beach sand off, and two bath houses with separate changing stalls and restrooms. A lifeguard is on duty 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily on a seasonal basis from March to September for swimmers enjoying the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Note: there are no boat/canoe/jet ski launch facilities in this park

A dog park was added in 2003. Dogs are welcome in our paw playground, however are not permitted on the beach. Wildlife is protected and may not be hunted, harassed, or fed. Additionally, it is illegal to remove, damage, or destroy plants. Intoxicants and firearms are prohibited.

Sand Key Park houses the base of operations for the artificial reef program, an interdepartmental cooperation program to build a reef in the Gulf. Sand Key Park’s natural communities include a beach where sea turtles annually deposit eggs. The nearby Clearwater Aquarium takes responsibility for these nests and keeps statistics. In July 2002, the media chronicled 84 hatchlings from a rare Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle making their way to the Gulf of Mexico. A salt marsh with viewing benches further enhances the park, where heron, roseate spoonbill, great horned owl, anhinga, and common moorhen nest and feed. The park has nine boardwalks leading to the beach, also perfect for the stunning beach sunset weddings performed each year.

Sand Key is a barrier island on Florida's West Coast. It's located just south of Clearwater Beach and across the Clearwater Pass bridge. Gulf Boulevard runs down the middle of Sand Key and separates the Beach Front Condos on the west side from the Intracoastal properties on the east side.

The west side of Gulf Boulevard has beautiful white beaches and rows of high rise condominiums. The East side of Sand Key is on the Intracoastal Waterway with numerous condos, townhomes, villas and single family homes. Many of the properties have boat docking facilities that can be bought or rented by the owners. The intracoastal waterway takes you under the clearwater pass bridge into the Gulf of Mexico for fabulous fishing or sightseeing.

Nicole Elk, the county's coastal management coordinator, reports that the beaches have white sugary sand, free from rocks- just the way beachgoers like it. The Sand Key renourishment project placed 1.2 million cubic yards of sand along nearly 9 miles of beach on the island of Sand Key, the barrier island that streches from Clearwater Pass to John's Pass. The project included the communities of Sand Key, Bellair Beach, Indian Rocks Beach and Redington Beach.
